Norway to increase development assistance

The Norwegian government intends to increase development assistance by NOK 2.2 billion in 2007. Overall, the development assistance budget for the year amounts to NOK 20.75 billion: the highest level ever, corresponding to 0.97 per cent of Norway’s gross national income (GNI).

18/10/2006 :: The Norwegian government’s political profile is reflected in five areas in the development assistance budget;

• Peace-building, human rights and humanitarian assistance

• Women and gender equality

• Environment and sustainable development

• Better governance and the fight against corruption

• Assistance in the field of oil and energy
 
The Government has also taken on particular responsibility for following up on Millennium Development Goal 4 on reducing child mortality. The Government will also follow up on the international target of doubling assistance to Africa between 2005 and 2010.
